Why choose us?
James Ruse Agricultural High School is an academically selective co-educational public secondary school that endeavours to nurture the academic, physical, social and emotional well-being of students, instil the core values of acceptance, service, participation, integrity, respect and endeavour (ASPIRE), and promote the importance of Agriculture in the school and the wider community.
Our enrolments are restricted (in Year 7 by the NSW DoE Selective Schools Test and in Years 8-11 by an application process involving a submission of achievements, a test and interview) of around 860 students drawn from all over Sydney, with 97% from non-English speaking backgrounds. All James Ruse graduates undertake tertiary education and the school motto, Gesta non verba - deeds not words - continues to be embodied by them when they leave.
Our vision: James Ruse Agricultural High School aims to provide highly gifted students with learning driven by curiosity and challenge. Our students develop knowledge, skills and values with an emphasis on collaboration, self-direction and a pedagogy that inspires lifelong learning. Our broad curriculum, including an accelerated study of Agriculture for all students from Years 7-10, and a plethora of varied co-curricular experiences helps to develop students into well-informed citizens who will make positive contributions to the world.

Visible Thinking
The flag ship program of the school's professional learning program are professional learning communities which support teachers to create a culture of thinking in their classrooms. The school has been working within the framework of Harvard Project Zero's Visible Thinking since 2020.
In 2024, a world- renowned educator, researcher, and author, Ron Ritchhart, Senior Research Associate and Principal Investigator at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education provided whole school professional learning for teaching staff.
Specialised Gifted Learning Support
At Ruse, our objective is to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes thereby encouraging each student to strive for their personal best.
By utilising the DoE HPGE Policy and associated resources and professional learning and by ensuring that the majority of teachers have undertaken UNSW's Mini Certificate of Gifted Education, we ensure that our school is a beacon of expertise in the teaching and learning of highly gifted students.
To support students who are not reaching their full potential the school has a number of mentoring programs, as well as a regular Study Without Stress course, a Literacy Support program, a student-led Maths Mentoring Program and Learning Support.
