Poultry

A Free Range Egg Enterprise using HySex Brown hens and a Meat Bird Enterprise raising Cobb 500 broilers operates at the Ruse Farm.

The Free Range hens are a hybrid breed similar to ones that are commonly used in commercial enterprises. A Student Poultry Squad manages daily tasks on a fortnightly roster. Eggs are sold at the school canteen and the school regularly competes in the Schools Hyline Layer Hen competition at Sydney Royal.

The Meat Bird Enterprise produces five batches of 60 broilers annually, raised for seven weeks in a barn. Three batches are used for a course assessment comparing two starter feeds, showing little difference in performance. Past trials demonstrated meat chickens grow twice as fast as layers due to genetics, dispelling myths about hormone use.

The school frequently enters the Steggles Meat Bird Competition at Sydney Royal, winning project awards in 2018 and 2022. Broilers are sold dressed and frozen to the school community. The AgShow team also raises pure breeds (Light Sussex, Araucana, Australorp, French Wheaten Maran, Wyandotte bantam) for local shows.

In 2023, the school won the Duckling Challenge at Hawkesbury Show, with students successfully explaining their production methods to judges.
