Vegetable Production

All classes from Year 7 to Year 10 (Year 11 Course) grow their own produce throughout the year. Brassica crops dominate the winter months, while potatoes are popular in Semester 2. A commercial crop of hybrid sweetcorn is also grown over the Christmas break, providing Year 9 students with an opportunity to study commercial crop production.

Pest and disease management includes the use of Dipel, a biological control for Cabbage White Butterfly, and crop rotation. Plots are rested and rotated to replenish nutrients, build organic matter and improve soil structure. Green manure crops are also grown, grazed by cattle and ploughed into the soil to improve its fertility. Hydroponics is another established feature of the program.

The iFarm 2.0 is now a permanent fixture on site. Powered by solar and wind energy, it is fully automated and has recently been upgraded to allow students to operate it directly through an app in the classroom. It is currently used for HSC plant trials.
