Creative and performing arts

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. We have also developed a Stage 5 course, Multi Disciplinary Communication.

Students learn how to make, perform, appreciate, listen and compose but ultimately, they learn how to create, collaborate, communicate and critically reflect to ensure their capacity to thrive in a complex world. We have also developed a Stage 5 course, titled MultiDisciplinary Communication, which is an exciting course that helps to future proof our learners.

Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire, enrich and transform the lives of the students we teach and those that engage with their works.

Students must study 100 hours of both Music and Visual Arts during Years 7 and 8. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in Drama, Music, Multi Disciplinary Communication and Visual Arts in Years 9 & 10. Music II is facilitated as an accelerated course where students sit their HSC in Year 11 and Music Extension is offered in Year 12. Drama and Visual Arts are also offered in Stage 6 and students, in all three areas, do unbelievably well due to the rigour, passion and commitment to excellent learning from their peers and teachers.

MAD (Music, Art and Drama Nights)

Each year we showcase the works of our gifted and talented artists in a MAD Night. It is a wonderful night of creativity, innovation, possibility and opportunity for our students. It is certainly a night where we all feel proud to immerse ourselves in the transformations of our learners. The structure and theme is alerted each year to maintain intrigue and excitement.

Musical

A whole school effort led by the CAPA Faculty, James Ruse produces a musical in April of every year and it is always a joyous time for all involved! Rehearsals begin in Term IV for our principals and then the chorus are brought in at the beginning of Term I. Teachers work in teams of two to mentor students through the Elements of Production and student leaders’ step into the roles of Student Director, Student Musical Director and Student Stage Manager to encourage ownership, agency and voice in an integral whole school event. It is a tradition we are very proud of and one that keeps evolving each time we do it!

Drama Ensemble: Acting Up!

A new but integral part of our cocurricular Drama Program is the Stage 5 Ensemble – Acting Up! Students are selected by invitation only and these core players form our main performance group in the school and lead external competitions. We make together twice a week.

Year 11 Production

The Year 11 Production is part of our Preliminary Course and engages the students in making, performing and critically studying! Each year, we choose a new play, short story or sometimes create our own work to showcase the rich gifts and talents of our Year 11 directors, actors and designers.

Drama

James Ruse has an exciting and high achieving Drama Department that caters for and reflects the gifted and talented needs of our students.
