Ruse Life

SRC

The James Ruse Student Representative Council, SRC, is composed of students from across the grades who gather to become one student body to embody the voices of the school and run school events.

Together, the SRC strives to:

  • implement changes fitting the needs of the students and the school,
  • improve the existing good in the school and
  • promote the school values (ASPIRE).

Representatives are elected per class at the beginning of the year and then divided into smaller groups named ‘streams’ where roles for specific events and general responsibilities are delegated according to the field.

SRC events include the annual SRC Week and Project Positive which aim to enhance the Ruse experience.

Prefects

The Prefect Body are the senior leadership group of James Ruse Agricultural High School who serve the school as representatives for all the different aspects of school life and culture. These individuals model and uphold the school ASPIRE values and work together to form the essential link between both the students, teachers and the broader school community.

Each prefect is a leader that is responsible for their own initiative in the school community. There are prefects who support certain school initiatives. For instance, wellbeing programs are carried out with the assistance from Grade and Wellbeing Prefects, co-curricular events with the CAPA Prefects as well as activities outside the classroom with the Extracurricular Prefects. In addition, the Prefects have an executive body that includes the School Captains, Vice-Captains, Senior Prefects, and Sports Captains who not only lead the Prefect body but assist with the organisation and operation of whole school events including assemblies and sports carnivals.

House Captains

There are 4 Sport Houses at Ruse: Jones, Mullavey, Rassack and Toft. Each house elects a House Captain to lead their House peers in competing in the three carnivals (Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country) to win the Carnival Shields.

They also lead and boost morale of their Houses in a variety of other school events, such as 3on3 soccer/basketball, dance, debating and music competitions, with points going towards the JRAHS House Cup.

Maths Mentor

Our Maths Mentors are highly capable Mathematics students who have volunteered to work individually with students who would like some extra help at weekly lunchtime lessons.

Peer Mentor

Peer mentor students pair up with a new student entering Ruse in Years 8 - 11 to ease the transition into their new school environment.

Peer Support

Year 11 Peer Support leaders run 1-hour sessions for Year 7 students to cultivate a strong sense of belonging and build positive relationships amongst their peers in their cohort and with the rest of the school. They help Year 7 students develop problem-solving, decision-making and stress management skills.

Student Tour Ambassadorship

This programme allows students to train to become a Student Tour Ambassador to conduct school tours for prospective families and also alumni for their Back to School visits.

As well as representing the School, it provides a chance for the Ruse students to hone their public speaking and communication skills to the public.

Executive of a Club

Clubs are student led with supervising teachers. At the end of Term 2, each club hold annual elections to choose new executives to take up the responsibility of formulating and running engaging weekly meetings with their members.

Often clubs work towards special annual projects or events where executives strengthen their diplomacy and project management skills as well as perfect communication to educate the rest of the school body the causes their club advocates and champions.

The 280 strong James Ruse Agricultural High School Army Cadet Unit URAHSACU) has been an integral part of the school community since 1960. It is a youth-run organisation which falls under the jurisdiction of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and all activities are supervised by Adult Cadet Staff (ACS).

As the premier youth organisation, the Australian Army. Cadets (AAC) is committed to providing leadership training to youths, with more experienced cadets providing instruction to newer cadets in many areas including; first aid, navigation, fieldcraft and radio telecommunications (RATEL). Cadets are taught to uphold the ADF values to empower youth to achieve their potential: Service, Courage, Respect, Integrity and Excellence.

Cadets develop their skills through Home parades (held on Monday afternoon from 3:05 - 5:30pm), three weekend bivouacs and the week-long Annual hike held during the last week of the school year. The Passing Out Parade in Term 3 serves to officially induct recruits into the Unit after completing their initial course, as well as acknowledge the outgoing Year 12 Cadets for their dedication.

Other notable events include Anzac Parades and services.

Locations of past Annual Hikes include: Bogong High Plains VIC, Cape to Cape WA, Coffs Harbour NSW, Kangaroo Island SA and Maria Island TAS.
